The Discovery Channel decided to attempt to better understand the power behind an ultimate fighter’s strike (punch / kick) with slow motion, “time warp” video.  The participants for the study were UFC fighter Kenny Florian and his trainer Marc Della Grotte. The video simply slows down the entire motion frame by frame so that you can witness the entire impact of a strike.  The team reviews a variety of situations including leg kicks, pad work, a punch to the chest and finally a blow to the face.  The video’s pretty interesting.

UFC is really putting a lot into the UFC 87 “Seek and Destroy” fight card.  The event takes place at Minnesota’s Target Center, and the popular events of the night are Brock Lesnar vs Heath Herring in a heavyweight bout and of course Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch.  In addition to these two outstanding matchups, Cheick Kongo will take on newcomer Dan Evenson (10-2), Frankie Edgar takes on Hermes Franca, Kenny Florian takes on Roger Huerta, and Ben Saunders and Jared Rollins of The Ultimate Fighter will match up.  Sounds like a good night so far.

The results from the Ultimate Fight Night 13 are in… a bit late. But what a night and for free… it was hella good!

  • What? Yeaaaaaah! Houston Alexander got dropped with none other than a superman punch and lost 8 seconds into the fight. I could not believe it. James Irvin has a way with pulling off some crazy highlight reels. Like the time he dropped Terry Martin in the beginning of the second round with a flying knee. This guy can be incredible!

  • Anthony Johnson was a total maniac, amazing strikes with pinpoint accuracy. One heck of a fight.

  • Total shock to me.. I know I called Lauzon to win the fight, but K Flow put a hurtin on Lauzon.  He totally controlled the fight and took home the victory in Round 2.

I’ve never been much of a betting man, but I become more interested in betting odds when UFC 82 came around. I learned a little bit about the odds and made my prediction for the night, which was on the money. So today I checked out the odds for Ultimate Fight Night 13 on Bet Us and this is what we’re looking at:

Kenny Florian vs. Joe Lauzon odds

• Can this be right? Same odds, looks odd, no pun intended. I’m a total newb, so let me know…

Put down 180 to make 100 on Joe Lauzon? I’m pretty confident that Joe’s going to finish Kenny, this will be a great fight. If I had to make a bet of all three, I’d put my money on Lauzon for the Lauzon vs Kenny Flo fight.

The UFC has a another great Fight Night lined up for us… and the best part, free! Wednesday, April 2nd, Kenny Florian and Joe Lauzon will face off live on Spike TV at the Broomfield Event Center, Broomfield, Colorado. Both fighters are rising quickly in the lightweight division.  Lauzon’s coming off an awesome UFC 78 finish over Reinhardt, he wrapped his leg over his arm and sunk a nice rear naked choke to finish his opponent.   Florian’s entering the Octagon with something to prove.  Being that his last fight was a controversial win over Din Thomas at Fight Night 11, we should expect to see Florian coming out strong to make the right impression over the fans.

In addition to Florian and Lauzon facing off, Stephan Bonnar will face off with Matt Hamill, Karo Parisyan will take on Thiago Alves.  Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10AM MST / 9AM PST / 12 EST.

As the bet goes, “You can’t name my signature move” is a bet, or better yet, a challenge for MMA fans to come up with a name for Kenny Florian’s signature elbow. The person that comes up with a name for Kenny’s elbows will win a prize pack and a personalized thank you video from Kenny. The bet was created on October 1st and closes on November 1st. This fight was an interesting fight… (how descriptive), Kenny seemed to be doing very well on his feet against Din Thomas. Kenny was landing a lot of good kicks as well as punches. Din and Kenny went to the mat a few times and Din did an excellent job staying on top of Kenny and keeping Kenny off of himself. Late in the first round, Din shoots on Kenny, appears to blow out his left knee, and just lays there while Florian gets on tops, throws a series of punches (while Din just takes them without defense) and then loose with a rear naked choke to Florian. We’ll have to review the video, but it looks like Din blew out his left knee on the shoot.

This is nice to hear about this…  Jorge Rivera, Kenny Florian, Heath Herring and Amber Nichole Miller went to Afghanistan to visit the US Troops.  Kenny Florian wrote a daily “blog” for the NBC Sports website detailing their 5 day stay with the troops.  He talks about the die-hard UFC fans, their MMA Training seminar, the heat in Afgahanistan and how hard it must be to work there, the stories and more.
