Ultimate Fight Night 17 Joe Lauzon vs Jeremy Stephens Fight Results

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Ultimate Fight Night 17 was an eventful night.  Joe Lauzon took on the hard hitting Jeremy Stephens for the main event of the night.  Stephens came out strong early in the first with some bombs.  Lauzon wanted nothing to do with it and avoided all strikes and took Stephens to the ground immediately.  Lauzon attempted multiple submissions in the first, but was unsuccessful in finishing the fight that round.  The second round Lauzon continued his submission attempts and finally ended the fight with an armbar 4:43 in the second round.  Joe’s ground game looked outstanding, I can’t wait to see his next preformance.

The Ultimate Fighter 8 Finale Delivers Upset Contracts

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

The Ultimate Fighter 8 Finale aired last night.  The Light Heavyweight finalists for the night were Ryan Bader and favored Vinicius Magalhaes.  The Lightweight finalists were Efrain Escudero and the favored toughest nurse in the world, Phillipe Nover.  Both fights were an upset with the underdog taking home the six figure contract.

Ryan Bader def. Vinicius Magalhaes via TKO (strikes) – R1 (2:18)

The first finalist upset of the night was Bader vs Magalhaes.  Bader came out with a gameplan to avoid clinching with Magalhaes as Magalhaes would be destine to take Bader to the mat.  Bader stood up with Magalhaes exchanging strikes for the first two minutes until catching Vinny with a strong right which was deflected with Vinnys arm and just skimming Vinny’s temple.  The strength of Bader’s punch was so powerful that this defended strike rocked him.  Magalhaes hit the canvas and Bader pounced on him to finish the fight with strikes.

Efrain Escudero def. Phillipe Nover via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Going into this fight the striking skills displayed by Phillipe Nover on the Ultimate Fighter had everyone convinenced that he would dominate this fight.  But the wrestling dominance and improved striking of Efrain allowed Escudero to control the fight.  Standup exchanges typically lasted a handful of strikes before Efrain would duck under a punch and take Nover down.  Once on the ground, Escudero would control the fight with minor submission attempts and mild ground and pound.  Nover’s attempts to submit Efrain from his back were immediately recognized by Escudero and avoided.  In the end, Efrain took home the contract via a decision.

Other notable fight of the night:

Junie Browning def. David Kaplan via submission (armbar) – R2 (1:32)

Junie’s striking skills looked much improved. It’s took bad that his personality hasn’t.

Wilson Gouveia def. Jason MacDonald via submission (strikes) – R1 (2:18)

MacDonald took a beating from the ground and pound of Gouveia who weighted in 4 pounds overweight and had to share his purse.

Anthony Johnson def. Kevin Burns via KO (head kick) – R3 (0:28)

Revenge!  Their last fight ended in a controversal decision and Johnson having to get eye surgery from Burns’ finger pentrating his eye.  Johnson finished the fight this time with a brutal high kick knock out in the third.

Eliot Marshall def. Jules Bruchez via submission (rear-naked choke) – R1 (1:27)

Eliot Marshall’s striking skills and ground game looked great, but than again, he was fight Jules.

Krzysztof Soszynski def. Shane Primm via submission (kimura) – R2 (3:27)

To the surprise of many, Shane looked very good with his striking skills, but in the end, the Gracie Tampa fighter Shane Primm lost to Krzysztof via a kimura that nearly ripped his shoulder out of his body.

Ultimate Fight Night (UFN) 15 Fight Results, Diaz and Neer Fight of the Night

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Last night’s Ultimate Fight Night 15 was an entertaining night.  There were a number of great fights including the BJJ / Judo tactical battle between Nate Diaz and Josh Neer, which actually was awarded the fight of the night, earning both fighters a $30,000 bonus each. Clay Guida and Mac Danzig additionally had one heck of a fight.  Guida showed great endurance and was relentless with his take down attempts on Mac Danzig.  Danzig was clearly winded in the third, a first time seeing Danzig in this situation.

But perhaps the fight that had the greatest impact on the fans  was the third disappointing loss for Houston Alexander, this time in his home town of .  I have a lot to say about this, but I’m going to hold out for another post as I’m feeling the wave of a rant coming on… In the mean time, just what you were looking for:

  • Nate Diaz defeats Josh Neer by split decision.
  • Clay Guida defeats Mac Danzig by unanimous decision.
  • Eric Schafer submits Houston Alexander by Arm Triangle choke in Round 1.
  • Alan Belcher defeats Ed Herman by split decision.
  • Joe Lauzon defeats Kyle Bradley by TKO (Strikes) in Round 2.
  • Wilson Gouveia submits Ryan Jensen by armbar in Round 2.
  • Mike Massenzio  submits Drew McFedries by Kimura in Round 1.
  • Jason Brilz defeats Brad Morris by TKO (Strikes) in Round 2.
  • Dan Miller submits Rob Kimmons by Rear Naked choke in Round 1.
  • Alessio Sakara defeats Joe Vedepoby KO (Head Kick) in Round 1.

One quick question, with such big names as Alessio Sakara and Joe Lauzon, why weren’t the fights televised?  Any idea?

Anderson Silva vs James Irvin Fight Prediction Video

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

I’m really starting to love these MMA prediction videos.  There’s a ton of guys out there who are totally into the video making process, some who know their stuff, other’s who don’t have a clue. Today’s special is for the Anderson Silva vs James Irvin fight. My man “The MMA Analyst” aka the untrained Rashed Evans, has his predictions for the entire night, but let’s just focus in on Anderson Silva fighting James Irvin.  The prediction is that James Irvin is going to get “tooled” by Anderson Silva. Sounds about right to me.  Here’s his breakdown.  Silva ran through Henderson and Rich Franklin without issue, his losses are barely losses, DQ, etc.  Irvin in the MMA Analyst’s opinion is at best light heavyweight top 30.  He will be no problem for Anderson.  The fight doesn’t make sense in his opinion. If Silva beats Irvin, what does that mean? Nothing.  The match up doesn’t make much sense, not an amazing match up.  Possibly match up with Chuck Liddell and we’ll have a serious fight and a serious situation if Anderson wins.

Overall, despite cracking the Rashed joke, I like many of the points that the MMA Analyst’s makes regarding this fight, what do you think?

Oh and what are your predictions?  Anderson Silva wins, first round, KO? Betus has it Silva – 500 to Irvin 350.
