Sports Illustrated recently interviewed John McCarthy on his departure from the UFC. John stated that the biggest decision for his leaving the UFC was the fact that commission rules (Nevada State Commission), suggest that John McCarthy working as a broadcaster for the Fight Network as well as a referee, was a conflict of interest. However, this applies to the Nevada State Commission only, so… If a UFC event were outside of Nevada, most likely in another country, say perhaps the UK, and that country’s commission does not see broadcasting / refereeing as a conflict of interest, then John would be able to officiate a fight. Although this is a possibility for John, it would more likely take place in the future than now.

It’s official, Big John McCarthy is retiring as a UFC Referee for an opportunity to become an on-air personality and adviser with Toronto-based The Fight Network. Tonight, TUF 6 finals will be John’s last bout with the UFC, unfortunately ending with 99 refereed events for the UFC – 100 would have been cool? But then again, the UFC wasn’t the only place that he refereed, and considering this, he has worked at over 500 mma events in total… I guess the 100 mark isn’t so cool after all?

According to MMA Junkie, Big John McCarthy, the infamous “Let’s get it on!” UFC Referee who’s been around since the early days of the UFC, may announce a retirement this Friday. According to MMA Junkie, McCarthy is scheduled for an interview to make an important announcement. According to sources, this announcement may very well be his retirement…  Junkie stated that McCarthy has refereed 98 of the total 100 UFC events.  It seems very possible that John might end his career on his 100th event which would be UFC 80 granted he participates in UFC 79.  The results of the interview will be interesting.

So I was running through a new mma directory on the net, and I stumbled across Big John McCarthy’s website – you know the UFC referee who’s catch phrase is “let’s get it on”.  The website is pretty straight forward, it has a bio, a store (Big John Gear) and a multimedia section including a desktop wallpaper.  I don’t know how much of a Big John McCarthy fan base there is out there, but for those of you who like John, here’s a wallpaper “let’s get it on your desktop” – I know, that was cheesy.
