Friday, September 5th, 2008

Matt Hamill appears to be extremely excited for tomorrow night’s UFC 88 fight against Rich Franklin. He has been training very hard for this fight, is in the best shape of his life and is very thankful for the opportunity to fight Rich Franklin. Matt thinks that fighting Rich will be the perfect test for him.

Rich Franklin sees the fight as a difficult fight for him due to his friendship with Matt Hamill. In response to people asking him what his thoughts are about this being a must win fight, Rich doesn’t see it as a must win situation. Rich states that Matt has helped with him his wrestling in the past and thought to himself in the past, I feel helpless, what would I do if I had to wrestle this guy?

Matt Hamill’s Response to UFC 78 Evans vs. Bisping

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Matt Hamill responded to today’s UFC 78 announcement that Michael Bisping would fight Rashad Evans for the UFC 78 Main Event. Here’s what he said about the UFC 78 announcement on his website:

“10/04/07
Wow! Let me just say… I am in shock. First, I get hosed by two judges in London and now the much anticipated rematch has evaporated in front of my eyes. I’m starting to feel like the deck is stacked against me. Duff, my trainer/manager told me he thought something like this would happen when he read Bisping’s statement on the internet. He said it looked like Bisping was looking for a way out of the rematch. I posted a statement about my knee surgery on 9/25 so everyone would know it was minor, and I would be ready by mid December. I didn’t think six weeks was that long of a wait, apparently, Bisping and the UFC did. I am so hungry to fight. I had surgery to add wrestling back to my arsenal. I fought Bisping’s fight at UFC 75 and I was looking forward to fighting my fight in the rematch. I feel honored that so many people have told me I won the fight in London. It makes the decision easier for me to accept. I want to fight… I want to fight ASAP! Hopefully the UFC will schedule a fight for me soon. I would like to fight in December or January and hopefully Bisping after that… If Bisping has the guts to do it again.”

Michael Bisping Wants a Rematch Against Matt Hamill

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

According to UK’s the Sun, Michael Bisping wants a rematch of his UFC 75 fight against Matt Hamill.  Bisping stated to the Sun, “I thought it was a close fight, closer than I would have liked it to have been. But I’ve called the UFC and asked for a rematch because I feel I could do a lot better.”  Bisping continues, “I want a rematch as soon as possible – I don’t want to waste too much of my career on Matt Hamill.”

Bisping admitted that he was surprised by Hamill’s improved stand up, but feels that he won the fight fair and square. “…it’s not like I went out there and got knocked out in 30 seconds. I think people need to realize that”.

Matt Hamill’s Offical Statement about UFC 75 Mike Bisping Fight

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Matt Hamill just released an official statement about his UFC 75 fight against Michael Bisping. The fight had a ton of conversely regarding the decision. For those of you who haven’t seen it, you can find the Matt Hamill vs. Mike Bisping fight here. and deserves Matt’s personal take on the fight, so here it is:

“Official Statement from Matt Hamill

I would like to thank everyone for their unbelievable support. I fought my heart out in London and feel I should have won the fight. The outpouring of support from people all over the world has touched my heart. It validates my performance to myself and that means as much as a win to me. I think MMA is a great sport and I don’t believe in any kind of a fix. The two judges that scored the win for Bisping obviously need to re-evaluate the way they score a fight. You can’t win a fight when you run for three rounds. They need to study the criteria for scoring an MMA fight: effective striking, grappling, takedowns, aggression and control. Bisping did none of that in my opinion. The UFC has the best MMA in the world and I am proud to be a part of it. I will be fighting in the UFC for a long time. Thanks again to all my fans, especially to all the English fans who came up to me after the fight to tell me I was the winner. I will be back in the octagon very soon and promise to fight my heart out like I always have.

Matt Hamill vs Michael Bisping UFC 75 Video

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

Matt Hamill has really improved on his standup since his appearance on The Ultimate Fighter reality show. Hamill did an amazing job standing up with Bisping, and actually dominated most of the 1st round of the fight. Bisping did a great job avoiding any serious damage from Hamill on the ground. I was very surprised to see Hamill’s lack of submission attempts. The overall fight was exciting…

Matt Hamill Was Discovered as a Bouncer!

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

In a recent article about Hamill from The Observer-Dispatch, Matt talks about how he was first discovered.  Apparently he was working as a bouncer in a New Hartford club when a rowdy football player started a fight with him.  Matt quickly put him in a cobra choke and shocked the bar patrons.  The full article is outlined below.  Please note that the original link is down, but I wanted to give proper credit to the Observer.

Hearing-impaired Hamill a fighter

UTICA — New York Mills resident Matt ‘The Hammer” Hamill calls being born deaf a blessing.

He said not hearing the droves of cheering fans at his Ultimate Fighting Championship matches allows him to achieve a higher level of focus than his opponents.

“I’m deaf, I can’t hear the noise,” Hamill said. “I can’t hear the coach either; I have to use my own game plan. Sometimes people underestimate me because I can’t hear, but they have no idea what I’m capable of. There are no distractions for me, nothing to get me nervous.”

Hamill does admit that before his last fight, a technical knockout of Rex Holman on March 3, he could feel the rumbling sensations from the crowd for the first time in his life.

“I could feel all the vibration and the screaming,” Hamill said. “It made me ready to go.”

After college, Hamill, a Loveland, Ohio, native, moved to New York Mills to be closer to his daughter after he and his wife, a Whitesboro native, split up.

He was discovered one night while removing rowdy football players at Tom Cavallo’s Restaurant in New Hartford, where he worked as a bouncer.

“I told them they need to leave,” Hamill said of the incident. “One of them tried to fight me off so I put him in a cobra choke and threw him out. Everybody was watching like they couldn’t believe it.”

It was then Hamill was approached by one of the patrons who had the idea for him to apply for the UFC. Hamill didn’t know what it was at first, but looked it up online.

He found that it was a sport of bare and rugged combat, two men pitted against each other inside of an octagon locked into a steel cage. He knew it was a good fit for his personality and skill-set.

“I was glad they picked me,” Hamill said. “I was in the top 12 out of 3,000 people.”

Hamill a three–time Division III national wrestling champion at Rochester Institute of Technology and a Division III Wrestling Hall of Famer, is undefeated in the UFC. He was also named the 1997 USA Deaf Sports Federation Athlete of the Year.

After training with UFC Middleweight Champion Rich Franklin, Hamill appeared on the reality show “Ultimate Fighter 3″, a tournament style contest for up-and-coming UFC fighters.

On the show, Hamill didn’t lose any matches and quickly developed a reputation as a top competitor with a brutal assortment of takedowns and a wide array of strikes. However, he broke his arm in his last victory on the show, a unanimous decision over Mike Nickels. He won the fight jabbing with one arm, with the other lying limply at his side. He wanted to continue in the competition, he wanted to move on, but the show’s producers wouldn’t let him.

From there, he trained with renowned UFC champion Tito Ortiz in California, and has continued to spend long stretches training there. He describes the preparation he goes through there as ‘raw’, and said most men who have tried to join them couldn’t will themselves through the arduous training.

“A lot of people gave up,” Hamill said. “I’m not really a give-up type of person; I want to be great.”

He also trains locally with trainer Duff Holmes, Utica Boxing Association pioneer Tim Greene and a variety of martial artists including Ken Kronenberg and Ray Newkirk.

“The first time I trained him we actually sparred a little,” Holmes said. “I was in awe; I never felt anything like that pain in my life.”

When asked what separates Hamill from the other athletes he’s worked with, Holmes didn’t hesitate.

“Heart,” Holmes said. “He’s got more heart than 100 men combined. He doesn’t stop, doesn’t quit.”

Hamill said his daughter knows what he does, and she wrestles herself. In fact, he hopes to use his newly found popularity to train as many potential fighters as possible.

That’s why he has been helping out with Whitesboro High School’s wrestling team. It’s also why he’s opening his own school, and plans to have a fighting cage, a wrestling mat, and some weights in it. He says it will be a school of mixed martial arts. He’s in the process of remodeling a building across from the Uptown Theatre on Genesee St. into the Matt Hamill Training Center, but says the vision is clear.

“I’m tired of driving to Syracuse and flying to California,” Hamill said. “We need something here.”

Hamill said he’s happy with the treatment he gets when walks around and estimates that 100 people have stopped by his house in New York Mills seeking autographs and pictures.

“They go crazy,” Hamill said of his fans. “I like it, it’s not bad. I’m new to it, I still have to get used to it.”

When kids who are interested in wrestling or martial arts see Hamill, they ask when he’s holding a camp or clinic. Now, he hopes to work with those people full time, in between traveling the country to pummel his competitors.
