UFC 81 Fight Results - Frank Mir Wins, Antonio Nogueira Wins

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

The UFC 81 results are as follows:

1. Rob Emerson (155) def. Keita Nakamura (155) via split decision
2. Marvin Eastman (185) def. Terry Martin (186) via unanimous decision
3. Tim Boetsch (205) def. David Heath (205) via TKO (strikes) - R1 (4:52)

Tim Boetsch was a complete animal in his UFC debut.  Going into the fight with 10 days notice, Boetsch completely overwhelmed David Heath, ending the fight by throwing him like a rag doll to the mat and then pounding him.

4. Chris Lytle (170) def. Kyle Bradley (170) via TKO (strikes) - R1 (0:33)

Lytle overwhelmed Bradley with a barrage of punches ended the fight in just seconds.  Lytle stated that he wants to continue fighting like this, ending fights before a decision is possible.

5. Tyson Griffin (155) def. Gleison Tibau (156) via unanimous decision

Griffin’s stand up looked amazing.

6. Ricardo Almeida (185) def. Rob Yundt (185) via sub (guillotine) - R1 (1:08)
7. Nate Marquardt (185) def. Jeremy Horn (185) via sub (guillotine) - R2 (1:37)

Marquardt has been training with Greg Jackson’s camp.  Totally ripped up and looking conditioned, did what very few have done to Jeremy Horn - submitted him.

8. Frank Mir (255) def. Brock Lesnar (265) via sub (kneebar) - R1 (1:30)

Frank Mir took down the beast!

9. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (237) def. Tim Sylvia (261) via sub (guillotine) - R3 (1:28)

Nogueira showed a ton of heart.  After being beaten badly by Sylvia in the first round, Nogueira gained confidence in the second and setup Sylvia with some amazing jiu jitsu in the final round.

Frank Mir Takes Down the Beast, Brock Lesnar

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

I without a doubt want to see Brock Lesnar fight again.  Brock did a hell of a job coming into the fight against Frank Mir.  Brock immediately overwhelmed Frank with a take down going into side control immediately and then dropping some hammer fists on Frank.  Brock continued to overpower Mir while on top, throwing a barrage of punches.  After landing a shot to the back of Mir’s head, referee Steve stepped in and broke up the fight, giving Mir his time to recover.  The two stood up again, Frank threw a kick which appeared to hurt Frank much more than Brock. Brock then threw a punch while knocked Frank down, but wasn’t a knock out or flash knock out.  Brock then got on top of Frank and threw a barrage of punches yet again.  Frank was in big trouble at this point.  Using his heart, he mustard’ up an armbar attempted, following by a knee leg lock and ended the fight with some great jiu jitsu.

Although Brock lost the fight, Brock showed some amazing power and great wrestling skill.  Combine with with some jiu jitsu defense and Brock is going to be a force to be reckoned with.  I’d love to see Brock train some defense and come back against someone not as skilled with their ground game as Frank Mir is.

He talks about how he likes going up against Lesnar because he’s a big name and has a lot of potential and will bring many of the WWF / WWE wrestling fans into the UFC / MMA game. Brock Lesnar Pre UFC 81 Interview Video about Upcoming Fight with Frank Mir

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Brock Lesnar comes off very humble during his pre UFC 81 interview.  Brock talks about  he knows that anything can happen in the ring.  He can get get caught right on the button and lights out.  He hasn’t been fighting long, but he’s humble enough to know this.  Brock’s working a bit on his ground game, he jokes that he knows an Armbar and a Toe Lock.  He talks about his pro wrestler status and how he understands that there’s a lot of hype.  He understands that people dislike him because he’s entering the UFC as a feature because of his wrestling background.  He states that he still has to pay his dues to prove himself and win the fans over. He’s asked why he’s going up against Frank Mir, a former UFC champion.  He feels that by taking on Frank, if he defeats him, it’s instant credibility, which he needs going into the UFC as someone who is hyped up. If he goes up against someone who’s not so well known and wins, it will do very little for his cred.

Brock talks about the shape he’s in.  He jokes that he’s out of shape.  But with all honestly, he thinks that he’s in better shape than he was in College.  At the time of the interview, he says that he feels like crap, had little sleep, all due to a poor flight into Vegas from Minnesota.

Overall, the interview is excellent.  Brock drops a lot of good jokes, has great humor, and comes off as an intelligent fighters, something always great for the sport.  Check out the video here:

Tomasz Drwal to fight David Heath at UFC 81

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

My buddy over at mmablog.pl (polish mma site) announced that a friend and training partner of Tomasz Drwal stated that Tomasz Drwal will match up with David Heath at UFC 81. For those of you who remember, David Heath fought Babalu at UFC 74, he was a totally bloodly mess and got finished with an anaconda that was held way too long.
