Competition Pushes The UFC To Go Free With PPV’s

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

We all know that EliteXC has an upcoming event on October 4th featuring MMA stars Ken Shamrock, Kimbo Slice, Cyborg, Gina Carano among others.  We all know that’s it for free, thanks to CBS Saturday Night Fights.  And well all know that this is competition for market share for the UFC.  So, just like last time, the UFC has responded with some free PPV airings.  Now… airing a live PPV and airing a repeat of a Pay Per View are two different things.  Most of us have already seen UFC 86, which will air for free on Spike TV, the same night, Oct 4th, that EliteXC will be airing live.  We also have seen UFC 87 which will air free, October 11th, the same night that Affliction’s canceled PPV event was suppose to show.  So why is the UFC going to these measures to air less competitive content?  Which station will you be tuning into on October 4th?  If you DVR or Tivo both airings, which will you watch in real time? I know that I’ll be sitting back watching EliteXC live rocking my Team Kimbo T-shirt.

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Last night’s UFC 87 was quite an exciting event.  From Jason MacDonald proving that he can roll bjj with some of the best to Georges St. Pierre knocking Jon Fitch down multiple times, spectators were on their feet for many of the fights.  The UFC 87 fight results for the night are as followings:

  • Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch - St. Pierre wins via Unanimous Decision
    • Fitch showed incredible heart being Knocked down multiple times and battered.  St. Pierre showed incredible stamina and passed Fitches guard, the first time anyone has every done so in the Octagon.  Overall GSP controlled the fight and clearly took the victory.
  • Brock Lesnar vs. Heath Herring – Brock Lesnar showed up looking to win and opened up the fight with a flying knee.  Brock controlled the entire fight on the ground and standing up.  He landed a solid blow bringing Heath to the mat.  The fight went the distance and Brock beat Heath Herring by Unanimous Decision.
  • Rob Emerson vs. Manny Gamburyan -
    • A 12 second highlight fight ending with Manny KO’d on the mat, while Emerson takes the victory.
  • Kenny Florian vs. Roger Huerta – K-Flo takes the win via unanimous.
  • Jason MacDonald vs. Demian Maia
Result: Demian Maia defeats Jason MacDonald by Submission at the third.  MacDonald does a hell of a job defending Maia BJJ and performing some of his own.

UFC 87 Fight Night Video: Georges St. Pierre Vs. Jon Fitch & Brock Lesnar Vs. Heath Herrig

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

UFC 87 takes place tonight, in just a matter of minutes. And to get you ready for the two big fights of the night, Georges St. Pierre vs Jon Fitch and Brock Lesnar vs Heath Herrig, we’re bringing you the official weigh in video from ESPN. Expect two outstanding fights. In my opinion, Georges is going to overwhelm Jon Fitch with his ground game and go the distance. Brock Lesnar’s going to step it up and show us more of his talent, but in the end, Heath Herrig’s experience in MMA is going to win the fight for him. Enjoy this video for now.

Here’s a pretty in-depth fight preview video for the upcoming UFC 87 fight match up between former WWE star Brock Lesnar and Heath Herring.  The event will take place this weekend, August 9th at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Brock will match up with Heath and hopefully show that his BJJ ground game has improved since his debut/loss against Frank Mir.  Although the fight against Mir ended in a loss for Lesnar, he showed great force and power the first time in the Octagon.
