UFC 91- More 1st Round Endings Than You Can Count…

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

UFC 91 was an exciting event with many first round victories for the main card. The first fight of the main card being Nate Quarry vs Demian Maia which ended only 2:13 into the first round via a rear naked choke submission by Maia.  The second fight was Gabriel Gonzaga vs Josh Hendricks which ended with a solid right punch to the jaw of Hendricks and two somewhat undesired blows by Gabriel Gonzaga to Hendricks while on the ground ending the fight 1:01 into the first round.  The next fight was Tamdan McCrory vs Dustin Hazelett, both fighters exchanged some lightning fast punches, but Hazelett was the victor 3:59 into the first round.  See the trend here?  The final main card fight ending in the first round was Kenny Florian vs Joe Stevenson.  Florian put on one hell of a performance, excellent muay thai skills followed up with amazing BJJ.  Florian quickly passed Stevenson’s guard and won with a rear naked choke 4:03 into the first round.

The final main card fight of the night was the fight we were all waiting for.  Brock Lesnar versus Randy Couture.  What an upset for all of us Randy fans.  Randy held his own in the first and the second until getting caught with a punch somewhat to the back of the head / temple, which dropped Randy to the mat, only to catch a ton of hammer punches from Brock.  Hats off to Brock, he will soon take on the victor of the Frank Mir vs Antonio Nogueira fight and loose to either opponents excellent BJJ.

UFC 91 Nate Quarry vs Demian Maia Fight Results

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

UFC 91 is live! Two minutes and thirteen seconds into the first round, undefeated in the UFC fighter Demian Maia, defeats Nate Quarry.  The fight didn’t last long on standing up.  Nate and Demian exchanged minimal strikes before going to the mat at which point Maia capitalized on his strength.  Demian quickly took Nate’s back and waited patiently for the opportunity to get his arm around Quarry’s neck to sink in the rear naked choke.  The opportunity became available and Demian finished the fight 2:13 into the first with a rear naked choke.  This guy’s jiu-jitsu is legit.

Video: Randy Couture vs Brock Lesnar Fight Will Bring in Big Bucks

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

An ESPN interview with Dana White revealed that the upcoming UFC 91 fight between Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar is going to be one of the biggest UFC events in history. Dana White and the corporate UFC team believes that this will be the biggest UFC PPV draw ever. The UFC thinks that they will have 1.2 million Pay Per View buys on this event. Dana thinks the draw will come from both traditional UFC fans as well as the WWE fans which will bring in a new crowd of purchasers.

UFC 91: Amir Sadollah No Longer Fighting Due to Leg Infection

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

According to the UFC, “A leg infection has forced The Ultimate Fighter season seven winner Amir Sadollah to withdraw from his UFC 91 bout against Nick Catone this Saturday.”  Unfortunately the UFC was unable to find a replacement to fight against Nick Catone for the event and as a result, the undercard event Dustin Hazelett vs Tamdan McCrory will be pushed up and aired live on PPV.  So the UFC 91 Brock Lesnar vs Randy Couture card stands as follows:

  • Randy Couture vs Brock Lesnar
  • Kenny Florian vs Joe Stevenson
  • Gabriel Gonzaga vs Josh Hendricks
  • Demian Maia vs Nate Quarry
  • Dustin Hazelett vs Tamdan McCrory
  • Jorge Gurgel vs Aaron Riley
  • Jeremy Stephens vs Rafael dos Anjos
  • Mark Bocek vs Alvin Robinson
  • Matt Brown vs Ryan Thomas

So the fight that everyone’s interested in… without a doubt Brock Lesnar vs Randy Couture. I think this is going to be an outstanding fight with a lot of different elements that come into play.  Brock physically is so much larger than Randy that regardless of MMA skills, I think Brock has the advantage standing up.  So, naturally you would expect Randy to take it to the ground.  But do you really want to be on the ground with a NCAA wrestling Champ who weighs 270lb?  I mean, Randy’s an 3 NCAA All American, you can’t discredit him from that, but weight is a huge factor.  So, that leaves him with the grappling game and some dirty boxing in my opinion.

Matt Lindland’s UFC 91 Randy Couture vs Brock Lesnar Fight Pick

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Matt Lindland and Randy Couture have trained together for years, so he has a good feel for Randy’s capabilities.  Matt thinks that Randy Couture will take it in the second or third round.  He believes that Brock Lesnar has a lot of muscle mass to carry around, which will only require more oxygen and will quickly tire him out.  He knows that Randy has had some issues in the past with bigger guys, but he has a lot of more experience these days, against an inexperienced guy.  Regarding what Randy will have to watch out for, Brock Lesnar’s punches in early rounds.  Although Brock may not be too experienced in striking, he’s extremely strong and will be strong early on, so watch out for the bombs.  As for how Randy will win, Matt believes with a ground and pound stoppage, some elbows will do the trick.

Video: Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar on ESPN Talking UFC 91 Fight

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Both Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar were on ESPN’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning” talking MMA with the hosts of the show.  Randy talked about how tactically there are some styles of fighting that he will have to avoid against Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 because he’s such a larger competitor.  Obviously the wrestling factor will come into play for each of the fighters.  Their backgrounds in wrestling will not lend much of an advantage to either fighter, but if any, most likely Brock due to his great difference in size over Randy.  As for submission wrestling or BJJ, Randy will surely have an advantage of the inexperienced Brock.

Watch how both fighters interact with each other leading up to the fight:
