Okay, it’s sad enough that a well liked UFC passes away, but things only get worse when you have people like Jon Koppenhaver aka War Machine (actually, I think that’s his legal name now) who speculate about a person’s death.  I normally don’t comment on things like this, but it’s just totally rubbing me the wrong way.  I don’t know if he was looking to be “edgy” and get some PR, or if he simply doesn’t know where the line is drawn, but comments like the following cross the line in my opinion. The following comments were made by Koppenhaver as reported by MMA Junkie:

“I still believe in my heart it was a suicide,” War Machine said. “Whether or not — maybe he didn’t shoot himself in the head, but I think he went up there maybe with plans not to come back. I just think he was a great fighter, he was a champion, and I guarantee you that he never made [expletive] for money. I guarantee you that he was at the end of his rope. There was no chance for a comeback. He was depressed, guaranteed. He had just lost to Kendall [Grove]. He was getting older. He knows he has no retirement plan. He had nothing, dude. That could be the outcome for a lot of fighters, myself included. I for damn sure guarantee you that if I’m in my 40s and I didn’t make enough money and I don’t have my own gym to support myself or whatever, I’ll probably kill myself too.”

Was Koppenhaver Evan Tanner’s personal accountant?  How the hells does he know anything about his finances and income sources?  He doesn’t…  Perhaps he missed the news about Evan Tanner not accepting corporate sponsorship when he signed a 4 deal fight contract with the UFC back in November of 2007. I don’t remember seeing Tanner bearing any paid ads on his short… do you? To me this would suggest that a person is financially sound, that’s just me. Second, why does he think he knows what Tanner was thinking? In the words of Immortal Technique, “but you know what the fuck I think is just pathetic and gay when niggaz speculate what the fuck ‘Pac would say, you don’t know shit, about a dead mans perspective and talking shit will get your neckbone disconnected”… and that’s just what happened.  The UFC cut Jon Koppenhaver aka War Machine.
