Frank Shamrock Debates Children’s MMA on ESPN - Video

Frank Shamrock went on ESPN earlier in the week for an ESPN special highlighting children’s MMA. Frank participated in a children’s MMA debate with a college basketball coach / author of a sports parenting book, Dan Doyle. Right out the gate, Dan states that any parent who’s involved in children’s MMA or is thinking about children’s MMA needs help. As an MMA teacher this sets Frank off from the start. I additionally feel that there is a disconnect among Frank’s interpretation of the term MMA and Dan’s, which only fuels the debate. He responds by talking about how Martial Arts is an art form, a personal experience and suggests that Dan wouldn’t understand that. He points out the brutality of boxing and the benefits of MMA. Although he brings up some good points, Dan seemed to take the stage, get under Frank’s skin and get the best of him. Overall, I’d have to say Children training MMA is no big deal, granted the extent of their training is pad work. However, I’d have to agree that children 6, 8, 9, 10 years old going blow to blow, that’s a bit much… give them time to grow and determine for themselves if that’s really what they want to do… Seems more like parents living through their kids… What do you think?

I find it interesting that a kid can go out and do karate, or boxing, or jiu jitsu or just about any other martial art form and its ok because its ‘traditional’. Yet when all of it gets put together (i.e MMA) is it really any more dangerous that any of the specific disciplines?
I did find some of the video footage a little disturbing and would suggest more in the way of protective equipment for kids that young, also perhaps slightly modified rules (no strikes to head on ground) and a minimum competing age of say 9 or 10.
