New Ali Sonoma Pictures Along With How She Started Modeling
Ali recently posted some new pictures to her myspace account, many of them posted below. In addition to posting some new pics to her site, she has additionally provided a summary of how she started modeling. For anyone interested in modeling - you can never get enough information before starting - the modeling business can be shady, so you need to know what you’re doing. Here’s what Ali has to say:
“How I started Modeling (Ali Sonoma)
I am posting this for all you girls out there who email and ask me how I did it…Hope this helps and best wishes to all of you!
You know, it’s so tough to tell who is legit and who is full of it…
I started modeling when I was 16…I got some pics from a local photographer, I had a lot of fun and knew I enjoyed it. It was like a hobby at first but then I kind of took a gamble and just went with it…if you look on these sites: onemodelplace.com, modelmayhem.com, babewarehouse.com, castingyou.com, stlauditions.com, there are so many others…
they have casting calls and auditions…the only problem is they are never in St. Louis!!! or in the midwest. It’s all about who you know and location in this business. That’s why it is so significant for me to move. I had the best agency in St. Louis, but because I am more of a glamour, commercial model, I received no work from them. There are 2 main types of modeling: fashion-includes runway, models have to be very slim, at least 5′9″, and hips have to be under 36″
The models have to be a very marginal and specific size because that’s the size designers chose to fit their clothes on. And, the majority of women are no where near a size 0-2. That’s why being a runway, fashion model is kind of rare. Commercial and print is a more flexible field. It can include anything from the “Can you hear me now” Sprint guy to Victoria’s secret models. It’s a very broad field, more flexible, and you just never know what major companies are looking for next. Sometimes they don’t want the supermodel look, sometimes they want an ordinary, plain look. It all depends. Now, how did I get work?
Mainly, I was in the right place at the right time. Last year, I was the new True Fitness model, appearing on posters, billboards, brochures, catalogs, etc. I got that job from going to the audition. It was a casting call posted on stlauditions.com (good site, by the way)
I was also the Fur and Leather Centre model, appearing in just about every St. Louis Post Dispatch issue, in the ads, and other various newspapers. I was also in the commercial for them. I got that job by knowing the advertising executive. Now, for the UFC Octagon Girl job…I submitted my pics to maximonline.com and at this time the UFC was looking for a new ring girl. I went through ten weeks of voting, with hundreds of girls, and finally it was narrowed down to 10. Us 10 girls were flown to Vegas to compete on the reality show “The Octagon Girl Search” I placed second in the contest, but because of fate, I am now the new UFC girl. (The girl who won was married and came to find out she was carrying a baby shortly afterward) So fate stepped in on that one! And there were no hard feelings, we actually called each other and congratulated one another.
For the Cantina Bar Tales movie (due out late this year) I got that role from knowing the producer. (I waited on him a year earlier and he remembered me and gave me his card.)
Recently I shot for ALIVE magazine, swimsuit edition, due out in May. I met the editor of the magazine, actually he knew of me, and asked me to shoot for it.
Now I really want to get into figure competitions and focus on fitness modeling. I would love to appear in muscle and fitness magazines and love to have a sponsorship for the competitions.
Anyway, so, it all depends, I am very lucky and fortunate for doing what I can, being in St. Louis and all. Thank God the Cardinals and Nelly put us on the map, right?!
So, if you really, really, want to pursue it, then you need to move to bigger cities. NYC is huge with fashion, L.A. is more commercial, print, and acting, Miami is commercial too.
But, if you want to just do it on the side, as a hobby, then I could refer to some photographers. And that choice makes all the difference. It’s good when you are first starting to do TFPs, to just get the feel of it. But once you have been published and made a name for yourself (get your own website, I still need mine…) you should charge to shoot. In St. Louis, there are 3 photographers I shoot with, G.W. Burns (artistic and glamor photographer), Rick Gould (ALIVE magazine photographer), and Ron Barlow. There are many great photographers I know of in L.A., Miami, NYC, and Vegas if you are traveling…But, be careful with photographers…get references and call former models. And, bring someone if you aren’t comfortable. Also, know your limits and know who you are. If you have no desire to ever shoot nude, then don’t let them try to convince you! You should never feel pressured or uncomfortable-it’s unprofessional on their part and it will show on camera!
Also, my last point, seek an agent and representation. You can not make it in this business without one!!! That is a fact! Ever model and star has one! It is hard to find a good one as it is, but having one will make life so much easier. I am meeting with over 200 at this proscout convention in May (www.proscout.com).
So, I hope this helps…have fun with it, be careful, trust your instincts, and if it is your dream, go for it! You have only yourself to blame for not trying.” - Ali Sonoma
