Kimbo Slice Goofing Around Before His Tank Abbott Fight - Video

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

In this Kimbo Slice video, Kimbo talks about his upcoming EliteXC fight with Tank Abbott and the days leading up to the fight.  Kimbo gets his gear from Triumph United and Reality Kings for the upcoming fight.  He makes some jokes about the shorts and his Johnson… It’s totally a different side of Kimbo, something interesting to watch.  Gives you a better feel for who the guy is, kinda like the Brock Lesnar video. So what has Kimbo been doing in the days leading up to his fight with Tank?  He’s been working on updating his website, apparently he’s an html code and graphic designer? and training for the fight.  Check out the video.

Brock Lesnar Pre UFC 81 Interview Video about Upcoming Fight with Frank Mir

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Brock Lesnar comes off very humble during his pre UFC 81 interview.  Brock talks about  he knows that anything can happen in the ring.  He can get get caught right on the button and lights out.  He hasn’t been fighting long, but he’s humble enough to know this.  Brock’s working a bit on his ground game, he jokes that he knows an Armbar and a Toe Lock.  He talks about his pro wrestler status and how he understands that there’s a lot of hype.  He understands that people dislike him because he’s entering the UFC as a feature because of his wrestling background.  He states that he still has to pay his dues to prove himself and win the fans over. He’s asked why he’s going up against Frank Mir, a former UFC champion.  He feels that by taking on Frank, if he defeats him, it’s instant credibility, which he needs going into the UFC as someone who is hyped up. If he goes up against someone who’s not so well known and wins, it will do very little for his cred.

Brock talks about the shape he’s in.  He jokes that he’s out of shape.  But with all honestly, he thinks that he’s in better shape than he was in College.  At the time of the interview, he says that he feels like crap, had little sleep, all due to a poor flight into Vegas from Minnesota.

Overall, the interview is excellent.  Brock drops a lot of good jokes, has great humor, and comes off as an intelligent fighters, something always great for the sport.  Check out the video here:

MMA as a Fitness Workout - A Place to Train MMA in NYC, Ronin Athletics

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

NBC’s 1st Look NY (New York) recently did a segment about MMA as a fitness workout alternative to going to the gym and hitting the treadmill / weights. 1st Look NY met up with Christian Montes, the head instructor of NYC’s leading MMA gym. The question was posed of whether or not MMA training can be a replacement for going to the gym. Christian stated that you can definitely get as strong and in shape in the MMA gym as in a traditional cardio and weight gym. A great point that Christian points out is, training MMA can take your mind off the workout, rather than saying “I’ve got 10 more minutes on the treadmill”.

My personal opinion… Those of train MMA would most likely agree with me… With respect to cardio, I agree 100% that MMA can be a replacement for the treadmill - hitting the pads and sparing is an intensive cardiovascular workout. As for MMA as a replacement for resistance training or weight lifting. Much of the ground game builds muscle strength, chokes and arm bars, as well as rolling requires a great deal of upper and lower body strength. Combine that with stand up to build even more upper body shoulder and back strength.

Check out the video, it gives a bit of an inside look at Ronin Athletics and their instruction Christian, who appears to be a nice guy. Memberships run around $200 a month for gyms in NYC… Head over to Ronin to find out their pricing.
