Strikeforce and UFC Show Love for Each Other, But What’s the Future of EliteXC’s Fighters?

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Now that EliteXC is kaput, what’s the future of EliteXC fighters Kimbo Slice, Gina Carano and Robbie Lawler? Perhaps it’s an opportunity in the UFC, perhaps it’s an opportunity with Strikeforce. Kimbo Slice was already offered an opportunity with the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter reality TV show, but he turned it down as he thought he wouldn’t win it. Lawler’s currently talking with Dana White about an opportunity to fight with the UFC and Gina Carano, unfortunately the UFC isn’t in that game, you know, they don’t do woman’s fighting. According to USA Today, White states, “Gina Carano’s a talented fighter”… “She’s a star. She should’ve been the main event (on CBS’ last EliteXC broadcast). My thing with women and fighting is there isn’t enough good women to create a whole division. Could I do some one-off fights here and there? Yeah, but that’s not really what we do.” Maybe Strikeforce will pick her up? She’s fought with them in the past, against Elaina Maxwell back in December of 06. I’m hopeful…

As for UFC and Strikeforce showing love for each other, Dana White had this to say about Strikeforce: “I hope they do 10 million viewers next week… Have you heard me say a bad word about Strikeforce? I wish them all the luck in the world. I have nothing bad to say about guys who are running the right promotion.”

Basketball Company And1 Enters the MMA Industry

Friday, October 31st, 2008

The basketball company And1 has recently decided to enter the MMA industry through sponsorship.  The company will sponsor it’s first fighter this upcoming November at UFC 91.  The first fighter to be sponsored by And1 is the well deserving Nate the Rock Quarry, who received a multi-fight deal.  Nate Quarry will first wear the logo of And1 as well as Nuvasive (the medical company that developed the method used in Nate’s spinal surgery) for his match up against Demian Maia.

According to NBC Sports, Quarry stated, “On paper it almost makes no sense whatsoever. I can’t wear basketball shoes into the octagon,” Quarry said with a laugh. “But And1 believes it’s great exposure for their overall brand. They are big fans of the sport and the whole company is excited about it.”

Director of Sports Marketing for And1, Rod Keller states, “Certainly, this is a basketball brand, but we have to be willing to throw traditional logic out the door and capitalize on opportunities… More and more athletes like Steve Blake train with MMA training methods. It’s a phenomenal workout. So is there a correlation to basketball? Yes. Is it logical? No.”

Paul “The Mauler” Lazenby Get His Nose Broken By WWE’s Stone Cold Steven Austin

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Alright, is news about Paul “The Mauler” Lazenby getting his nose broken newsworthy?  Definitively No.  However, it is when it’s supposedly WWE Wrestler Stone Cold Steven Austin who broke it, it might be.  Quick overview about Paul Lazenby, 7 fights total, 6 of them in Pancrase, all ending in a loss in the first round (one decision), except for his last fight, a unanimous decision in National Fighting Challenge.  As the story goes according to ProWrestling.com, the two were filming a scene for an upcoming movie titled “Damage”.  WWE’s Steven Austin caught Lazenby with a left hook by accident, leaving him with a broken nose and two black eyes by the end of filming the second take.  Is this simply a setup for another WWE superstar entering the MMA world?  Time will tell my friends, time will tell.

Anderson Silva Dominated By Daiju Takase Fight Video

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Right now, Anderson Silva’s looking unbeatable, but this wasn’t always the case. Anderson Silva has just losses and 23 wins. His loss to Yushin Okami was actually due to a DQ, Silva kicked Okami in the head while in Okami’s guard, it was pretty nuts. Having said that, I really only count 3 losses in Silva’s book. Here’s a Pride 26 loss that was recently posted to break. In the following video Anderson Silva gets caught in a triangle 8:33 into the first round. The entire fight Daiju Takase had the upper hand almost putting Anderson Silva into a variety of submissions, but in the end, he catches Anderson with a sick Triangle. Daiju Takase’s got some series BJJ skills.

UFC and Verizon Launch UFC On Demand FiOS TV

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

This is pretty insane, the UFC announced today that they have partnered with Verizon FiOS TV to bring Video on Demand to it’s fans. The new project is titled “UFC On Demand” and will provide viewers with access to historic UFC fights, UFC news and Fight Techniques. “UFC On Demand is a unique and innovative VOD program designed to educate new and casual fans about the sport, while giving hard-core fans access to ‘MORE UFC!’ content they’ve been clamoring for — at price points accessible to everyone. The service consists of a triple-tiered offering of three distinct services, with UFC Free Zone, UFC Fight Zone and UFC Event Zone:”

  • UFC Free Zone is an on-demand free service offering informative and entertaining short features on mixed martial arts rules, fighting disciplines, styles and techniques. The highly popular Countdown UFC shows and UFC event previews are also available via UFC Free Zone.

UFC Fight Zone features fighters who will be competing in an upcoming UFC pay-per-view event, offering fans the opportunity to see these champions and challengers in some of their most legendary fights and prior matchups. (maybe this is why they’ve been keeping YouTube in check?)

Anderson Silva’s Not Here To Play Around - Post UFC 90 Interview Video

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Anderson Silva put on quite a show during UFC 90. His strategy was to confuse Patrick Cote on Saturday night as he constantly changed positions, moved in and out and played around with a variety of martial arts styles, including wing chung. Overall, Anderson feels that it was effective. Anderson states that Patrick couldn’t find him, so his style was effective. Although some may think that he was playing around, he says that he wasn’t there to play, he was there to win.
